Amplifier

For mind-blasting sound effect, you may want to install a car amplifier to boost up your speakers and sub-woofer. However, it makes a big dent in your pocket when you get it fitted from outside. This pretty simple task doesn’t require rocket science; so do it all by yourself by just following you these simple steps-

1. Fix a place for keeping your amplifier and in case you are installing subwoofers then put the amp in the trunk next to the subwoofer attachment. For those wanting to power their car speakers with amp, they should ideally place it underneath the passenger’s seat.

2. For mechanical set up, you will require few cables. So, purchase the following wires for setting up the amp-

- A thick power cable, though the thickness will depend on the total wattage of your amplifier. But the cable will have to run from the battery to reach the amp. Make sure your cable has inline fuse to protect the amp.

- 3 feet ground cable of the thickness equal to the power cable.

- RCA cable to carry the left right signals from the head unit to the amp.

- A thin wire “remote on” wire of approx. 20 to 24 gauge, it will reach the amp through the unit

- Speaker wire, for main speakers buy a 16-gauge wire and for subwoofers you need to buy a 3 feet of 12-gauge wire per sub.

3. Assemble the tools like Screwdrivers, wire cutters, wire strippers, pliers, a utility knife, sandpaper, masking tape with a pen for labeling, 2 crimp-on o-ring ends for the power and ground cables for fixing up the amp.

4. Consult a manual and follow the instructions to take off the dash (just head unit) for hooking wires to the back.

5. Before installation, detach ground negative cable from the battery and keep in mind to always remove it before getting started.

6. Connect the side with the fuse of the positive power cable to the connector seen on the positive terminal of the battery. Put the o-ring in the bolt on the connector that ties your car to the battery. Then put the fuse in the fuse holder.

7. Take the power cable via firewall of your car to your amplifier. If you have kept your amp at the back, then the wire should preferably run from under the plastic molding which goes along the underside area of your car. Be cautious about the route of the wire because the power cables should never be close to the signal or speaker wires.

8. Now attach the ground cable to a metal bolt or screw accessible on the car’s metal within the 3 feet range of the amplifier. Unbolt it then clean the metal surface and connect the ground wire to it with the support of the O-ring and screw it again.

9. Taking off the head unit, reach the signal and remote on wires from at the back of the head unit to your amp. Join the RCA connectors and the remote on wire at the rear of the head unit.

10. Take the 16-gauge wire from each speaker to the amp. Now label each wire according to the speaker to which it is connected by using the masking tape. On the speaker, use pliers to strip off 1/4 inch ends of the cables and crimp on the female spade connectors. Hook the spade connectors to the speakers in a way that positive matches positive terminal and negative matches negative.

11. Fix everything to the amp. Try to strip off the end of the wire as much as it is needed so that no bare wire is visible. If you have subs, then connect them to the amp through the 12gauge wire.

12. Join back the negative cable to the battery and test the system.
